Are you also one of those people who like to visit small towns in different countries? I feel that you get to know that culture better this way, rather than just visiting it’s capital. So here are some suggestions for a one day trip Heidelberg, Germany.
Heidelberg is located in the south-west part of Germany and it is known for the Heidelberg University – one of the best ones in Germany. Due to the students there, the city has a very youthful and cheerful vibe set in an historical background.
The first thing you must do when you arrive in Heidelberg is go to the Main Street or Hauptstraße (German). That’s where the magic happens. They say it’s the longest pedestrian street in Europe – 1.8 km long. For the shopping lovers out there, imagine 1.8 km worth of shopping. That sounds fun, huh? Maybe take two day to go in every shop on the street, cause that’s a bit long. Walking down the street you will get to the Hotel Ritter. Built in 1592, the structure of the hotel keeps you gazing at it for a while.
2. Old Bridge
At the end of the Main Street you will find an Old Bridge crossing the Neckar River. This bridge connects the old city with a new district of Heidelberg. The bridge opened in 1788 and is 200 m long. The view is beautiful from the bridge. You also get to pass through the Old Bridge Gate which takes you back to the Middle Ages with its architecture.
3. Heidelberg Castle
Talking about views from the bridge, you can see the Heidelberg Castle from there. I was there with some friends, one of them living in Heidelberg. He did not let me turn around and see the castle until we’ve got to the perfect spot to see it. And he was right. The view was great. Because of some technical difficulties (wrong choice of shoes), we did not visit the castle. We just admired it from the bridge. But make sure you go there. I’ve heard the view over Heidelberg is wonderful from there.
4. Gelato Go
Here’s something for those with a sweet tooth. The best gelato I’ve had in a long time was in Heidelberg. The place is called Gelato Go and it’s located on the Main Street. You will easily spot it, because there’s always a huge line. But don’t be discouraged by that. They work fast and you will get you gelato in no time. Trust me, you will not regret it.
Among the same line, there’s also another place you should visit if you want something delicious. It’s supposed to have the best burger in town and I can state that it was delicious! The place is called Joe Molese and has an american vibe to it. I’ll just leave you with the picture to make an final statement.
Have you visited Heidelberg? What was your favorite part about it?
